Heavy Rotations:

Willie Watson - Folk Singer Vol. 1 (He is a former member of Old Crow Medicine Show. Love this man.)

Timber Timbre - Hot Dreams (Wonderfully haunting album. RIYL Nick Cave)

The Lawrence Arms - Metropole (Another fun/great album from the Larry Arms)

Strand Of Oaks - Heal (Indie Folk Singer Made a Rock Album Produced by J. Mascis. Awesome.)

Wrong Body - Big (Super fun album. I don’t know what to call it. Fun-Catchy Post-Punk/Hardcore?. I don’t know. Check it out)

Saintseneca - Dark Arc

Cloud Nothings - Here and Nowhere Else (This album is like a punk strokes album. Very fun)

The Antlers - Familiars ( I like this better than the lats 2 albums. Very solid album. Really nice Trumpet through out it)

Sharon Van Etten - Are We There (Fantastic and heartbreaking. Sounds about right)

Others I have at least enjoyed, but I haven’t given many listens:

Woods - With Light and With Love

Nickel Creek - A Dotted Line

Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire For No Waitress

Jack White - Lazaretto

Inventions - S/T

Owls - Two

Hurray For Riff Raff - Small Town Heroes

Conor Oberst - Upside Down

Lone - Reality Testing

St. Vincent - S/T

Owen Pallett - In Conflict

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - Fuck Off And Get Free We Pour Light On Everything

Tycho - Awake

Moonlit Sailor - We Come From Exploding Stars

First Aid Kit - Stay Gold (Disappointing/need more listens)

Also, This Will Destroy You released a new song and it is the best thing they have ever put out.

What a year for movies? it has been remarkable. There have been some great films from great directors who are starting to get some notice (Jeff Nichols, Steve Mcqueen etc) as well as the veterans (Coen Bros, Jonze, Payne, Linklater etc). Also, there have been some unbelievable performances. I won’t even begin to list off names. There are far too many to name. Well, here is my list of my favorite 30 films I enjoyed of the 50 or so movies I viewed.

Top 30 (Non-Documentary feature length films)

Well, enjoy the list. Have any questions about a movie, feel free to ask.

Some notable movies I have not seen… Philomena (need this), Frozen, Captain Phillips, Rush, August Osage County and probably a few more.

And just for fun…

The worst movie I saw this year was…

The Great Gatsby - Complete and utter trash    ;-)

Top 20

1. Kanye West - Yeezus
This album deserves all of the hype. Not much to say. I love this album through and through. Unbeatable production work.

2. Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires In The City
As does this one. Always enjoyed the band, but never loved an album. This one I adore.

3.Local Natives - Hummingbird
Plenty of folks think this one is not as good as the first one. I find it better. It has a much better flow and consistency. More minimalistic too. The first album feels more like a handful of singles that don’t flow well and some bland songs surrounding them. That album has probably their best songs, but it is not their best album.

4. Pokey LaFarge - Pokey LaFarge
Love this band. Great live show. If you like roots American music check this out NOW.

5. Enemies - Embark Embrace
This album is just a blast front to back. If you like instrumental based music in the vein of earlier Fang Island, Minus The Bear, Ghosts & Vodka, Marvins Revolt then you should get this.

6. Deafheaven - Sunbather
I have listened to this album so many times this year. It feels so raw and epic. Pretty much the only heavy music with screaming I have listened to this year.

7. Pretty & Nice - Golden Rules for Golden People
My favorite local Boston band put out their best album and are getting the recognition they deserve. Love this band. Get this album and go see them.

8. A Great Big Pile Of Leaves - You’re Always On My Mind
This is the album I have been listening to the most recently. RIYL: Minus The Bear, Foals, projects by Kinsella family members.

9. The National - Trouble Will Find Me
As moody as ever and more of the same, but it works. Some real gems on this one.

10. Unknown Mortal Orchestra - II
One of the first albums I listened to this year and it still holds up. Great recording, great melodies and very consistent. I need to see this band live.

11. Russian Circles - Memorial

12. Foxing - The Albatross

13. Bonobo - The North Borders

14. Chance The Rapper - Acid Rap

15. Daft Punk Random Access Memories

16. Lucius - Wildewoman

17. Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - Push The Sky Away

18. Lite - Installation

19. Sigur Ros - Kvelkur

20. Speedy Ortiz - Major Arcana

Best EP

Toe - The Future Is Now

Other albums I have enjoyed

Mayer Hawthorne - Where Does This Door Go
James Blake - Overgrown
Strawberry Girls - French Ghetto
Olafur Arnalds - For Now I am Winter
Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience
Frightened Rabbit - Pedestrian Verse
Jim James - Regions of Light and Sound of God
The Cave Singers - Naomi
Camera Obscura - Desire Lines
Houndmouth - From The Hills Blow
Dawes - Stories Don’t End
The Physics House Band - Horizons Rapture
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Mosquito
Boards Of Canada - Tomorrow’s Harvest

Probably a bunch that I am missing too.

Enjoy. If you have any recommendations based upon this please let me know.

Bonobo - First Fires (This might be the song of the year)

Vampire Weekend - Step

Chance The Rapper - Cocoa Butter Kisses

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - So Good At Being In Trouble

Pretty & Nice - The Frog

Deafheaven - Dream House

Daft Punk - Get Lucky

Kanye West - Blood On The Leaves

Pokey LaFarge - Central Time

Local Natives - Columbia

The National - Sea Of Love

Enemies - Nighthawks

Lucius - Turn It Around (possibly the catchiest song of the year)

I will be back with my best of Albums and Movies soon
